Easter in Anafi

On the morning of Holy Saturday, “cheese pies” are kneaded, that is, yellow bread with saffron and local cheese. In the afternoon throughout the village is diffused the smell of wood that burns for a long time to prepare the “oven” to receive the goat in a pan with refreshing cheese, well covered with foil, for about 6 hours. In Anafi on Holy Week the housewives prepare Easter sweets, buns with red eggs, cookies and traditional spices with fresh mizithra.

The door and the chimney of the “oven” are sealed with soil mud, so that no air passes and the meat burns. After the Resurrection the kid is ready.

On Easter Sunday the bells ring joyfully from the morning.

In the afternoon, the Second Resurrection takes place and all the inhabitants gather in the square of Agios Nikolaos, where after the service and the procession of the icons, they share sweets from the families that have lost someone of their own.
